Legend of the Arch Magus & Dragon Missing

Michael Sisa‘s Legend of the Arch Magus novels are an unambiguous guilty pleasure sort of series. Just an overpowered protagonist steamrolling his way through various issues thanks to a combination of pure personal domination and suspiciously reasonable secondary characters, with a small bit of kingdom building thrown in for good measure. So long as you don’t expect any sort of nuance it should be enjoyable enough for fans of the genre (though do beware of both pointless cliffhangers and fairly low page counts).

The first book in Talia Beckett‘s Dragon Apparent series has a couple issues. The first is the setting: Why is it raining so much in Los Angeles? Why are the dragons more afraid of humans than unstoppable soul-devouring centipedes? The second is more severe: Most of the characters, the protagonist in particular, suffer from either suicidal stupidity or inconsistent characterization (sometimes both).

Maybe things smooth out later on, but right now I just don’t have the stomach to power through such high levels of bizarre naïveté.
