  • The Water Magician: The Central Provinces Arc III & Dimension Wave

The third Mizu Zokusei novel is much like the first two. If you enjoyed the banter in those then there’s no reason not to continue on through this one.

Dimension Wave is a story in the vein of Free Life Fantasy, except with a protagonist who’s obsessed with fishing rather than crafting and isn’t (yet) notably overpowered. There isn’t anywhere near as strong a focus on game mechanics either, with it being more ensemble-based with a greater emphasis on character interaction… and fairly strong hints of future harem development.

Nothing of any interest occurs in the second Buchigire Reijou wa Houfuku o Chikaimashita novel. It’s incredibly mundane for the most part and I’m not thrilled about the sudden dungeon excursion. I’ll probably drop it here.

The second Mizu Zokusei novel on the other hand is much like the first. While this also has an inexplicable dungeon excursion (what is it with fantasy authors forcing gamified dungeons into their non-gameworlds?), the character interactions and assorted other developments continue to be entertaining.

Continuing the ‘sudden dungeon’ theme, although at least this setting is in fact a gameworld and the dungeon is only used as an assassination tool, Otome Game no Heroine de Saikyou Survival‘s second novel drops the battle-maid angle to return to the path of the murderhobo. My only complaint is an overuse of ‘fodder for my growth’ as a catchphrase.

Though Mizu Zokusei no Mahoutsukai Daiichibu has a number of issues (i.e. questionable protagonist personality, repetitious dialog style, unbelievable event progression etc.), overall I’d say it works acceptably well as a guilty pleasure overpowered protagonist series. It’s interesting the author chose to have the castaway be male, thus avoiding any awkward romance elements, and I like that they don’t apologize for delivering higher than average page counts.

Looks like I’ll be dropping Saiaku no Avalon following its second installment. The whole multiple player situation is really weird, the hybrid school/dungeon setting is bad, and the ever-fluctuating level of required secrecy is just plain annoying.
