  • EXP Is Golden #2 & HOW I BECAME KING BY EATING MONSTERS #2

Posted on May 4, 2025 9:51 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Ougon no Keikenchi novel moves away from the solo-play focus of the prequel to introduce some multiplayer elements to this MMO setting with the introduction of both an actual friend and the protagonist’s estranged sister. I’m not really sure at this junction where it’s intending to go, but so far it’s been entertaining enough.

The Monster no Niku series‘ second novel meanwhile is pretty much more of the same: The protagonist’s followers misunderstand his intentions/desires while his influence and power continue to grow unchecked. It still works well enough… though that may not be true for much longer. We’ll have to see if the epilogue events shake anything up or it just ends up a repeat of the first invasion.

  • Homunculus Tears & The Strange Adventure of a Broke MERCENARY #11

Posted on April 29, 2025 11:05 am by Offkorn Comment

I had to drop the Homunculus Tears novel (subtitle: Alchemy for the Brokenhearted) halfway through. It’s just so painfully overloaded with both forced sentimentality and forced fanservice. Basically nothing redeeming about it.

Something else I ended up dropping was the eleventh Kuitsume Youhei novel, which features the protagonists acting like complete idiots. They’ve experienced mind control before! Why are they so baffled about the people in this village not acting normally? When the animal companion is the smartest person in your party something has gone very, very wrong.

  • That Time I Got Reincarnated as a SLIME #20 & Housekeeping Mage from Another World #9

Posted on April 12, 2025 10:25 am by Offkorn Comment

Yeah, even if there are only two or so novels left I’m going to have to drop the Tensura series here. I simply have no interest whatsoever in reading about drawn-out conflicts involving characters that either had little previous focus or literally did not exist before this sequence of final battles.

The ninth Kasei Madoushi novel is unfortunately also a miss. The first segment is just incredibly bad in every respect, and the second is overflowing with forced sentimentality. There are a couple good moments scattered here and there… but nothing worth actually expending any effort to see.

  • The Otome Heroine’s Fight for Survival #5 & I’m not the final Boss’s Lover #5

Posted on February 28, 2025 12:16 am by Offkorn Comment

The Otome Game no Heroine de Saikyou Survival series continues to hold up well in its fifth entry. It marks the end of the titular game’s prologue and the action will apparently be shifting to an academy setting in the next novel, which is something I’m not looking forward to… but I guess we’ll see how it goes.

Checking on a whim, I was quite surprised to find that Choejong Boss’eui Aein’irani Ohaeibnida was back up on Amazon. Even more surprising was that the fifth entry turned out to be the series’ conclusion. Unfortunately, it’s not very good at all and makes me wonder if it just rapidly deteriorated here at the end or I happened to be in a particularly forgiving mood at the time I read the first four books.

  • EASYGOING TERRITORY DEFENSE #4 & The Strange Adventure of a Broke MERCENARY #10

Posted on February 18, 2025 1:42 pm by Offkorn Comment

Not much to say about the fourth Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei novel, as it’s much the same in atmosphere to the prequels. So if you greatly enjoyed the character behavior up to this point it should continue to deliver. Personally though, the titular optimism is starting to wear on me.

The tenth Kuitsume Youhei installment feels phoned-in. It’s not bad exactly, but just comes across like filler. It seems to only exist as an excuse to inform the protagonists of the missing dark gods’ names… but you could’ve just had the known dark god list them off and not have bothered with this otherwise pointless trip.

  • Dimension Wave #2 & Mercedes and the Waning Moon

Posted on February 13, 2025 3:43 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Dimension Wave novel goes in completely different direction from the first, right into solo base-building territory. The main problem with this being that it doesn’t make any sense at all for a single person to get transported to the island instead of their whole party, especially in what’s supposed to be an MMO, let alone be indefinitely trapped there and completely isolated from the outside. Probably going to drop it here.

Kaketa Tsuki no Mercedes has a misleading English subtitle (The Dungeoneering Feats of a Discarded Vampire Aristocrat, the Japanese subtitle is perfectly on-point though) considering that she’s never discarded. Quite the opposite. It’s the variety of overpowered protagonist series where due to certain circumstances they don’t actually realize how overpowered they are, and in general mood it reminds me a bit of Moto Ansatsusha, Tensei shita Kizoku no Reijou ni Narimashita minus the romance elements.

  • WIEDERGEBURT #1-5 & Privateer’s Commission

Posted on February 3, 2025 12:58 pm by Offkorn Comment

Another series that’s been floating around my recommendations page for ages, Brandon Varnell‘s Wiedergeburt novels (subtitle: Legend of the Reincarnated Warrior) mimic Asian LNs in structure.

The first book starts off quite awful with an exceptionally clunky writing style only to improve a shocking decree after the time warp. From there through the fourth book it remains a fairly entertaining overpowered protagonist series, the only issue being the rather arbitrary flashbacks (which the author freely admits at one point were just an excuse to include sex scenes). The fifth one however comes across as more forced than usual and future event developments look to continue on in that mold.

Randi Darren‘s Privateer’s Commission is one of the few books that survived the purge of anything that looked like it might be a fanservice-first series from my recommendation page, and I’m rather glad it did because it turned out to be a lot of fun with some hilarious ‘comedy of errors’ sequences. Not sure it’ll hold up if any potential continuation gives into consummating the harem… but as a stand-alone it works incredibly well.

  • Isekai Walking: Elesia Kingdom Arc & Housekeeping Mage from Another World #8

Posted on January 10, 2025 3:31 pm by Offkorn Comment

I will never understand why so many Japanese LN authors are obsessed with detailing their characters’ eating/cooking habits. It’s just utterly nonsensical, particularly for a series like Isekai Walking (English subtitle: Walking around the Otherworld). With that kind of name you’d think the book’s greatest focus would be on traveling, but no. Instead it’s a quarter food porn, a quarter walking with the related stat blocks, and half basic questing with some action. Worse is that while the protagonist’s base skill is indeed ‘Walking’, for some inexplicable reason leveling it allows him to instantly learn any other skill he wants; alchemy, swordsmanship, dimension magic… all are fair game.

The eighth Kasei Madoushi novel is quite good, and I’m impressed with how the author manages to continuously expand upon earlier events so naturally. This installment focuses mainly on the start of spreading housekeeping magic to other interested parties while also fitting in a bit of action and wrapping things up by getting our core group of characters all caught up with each others’ pasts.

  • My INSTANT DEATH ability is so OVERPOWERED: After Story & Sword Saint Adel’s Second Chance #3

Posted on January 8, 2025 3:29 pm by Offkorn Comment

Sokushi Cheat ga Saikyou sugite‘s Atoshimatsu-hen installment, oddly, starts off by detailing the healer’s first isekai adventure which occurred before the series proper began. Why? Who would ever care about that? From there it moves on to briefly address the other classmates before focusing on the one beastkin guy and the ninja duo. Little time is spent with the assorted Dannoura’s, and the protagonist barely appears.

The third Kenseijo Adel no Yarinaoshi novel is basically a mess. It starts out with far too much unicorn/pegasus fanservice and then ends with a ludicrously forced boss fight. Just the most hamfisted resolution possible.

  • Min-Maxing My TRPG Build in Another World #9 Canto I-II & From Villainess to Healer

Posted on December 30, 2024 12:47 pm by Offkorn Comment

The tenth and eleventh TRPG Player books are once again a split volume. The focus this time is on bringing down a drug cartel while facing off against a team of assassins, assassins who moonlight as love interests in the second half’s surprisingly sex-centered alternate timeline segment (the first alternate timeline segment features the protagonist as a pirate-hunting privateer). Nothing much to complain about in either half.

Kaifukushoku no Akuyaku Reijou meanwhile is an extremely light-hearted and low-stakes adventure with basically zero believability that looks like it’s going to end up more travelogue than dungeon-crawler. And though the ‘healer’ part of the title is well-represented, you can completely ignore the ‘villainess’ part since the only villain in this story so far is her former fiancé.
