Norimichi Shimada has a secret crush on Nazuna Oikawa which he can’t bring himself to admit. He doesn’t know about Nazuna’s troubled family situation however, and on the night of the fireworks festival is completely unprepared when she suddenly asks him to run away with her.

(Should have quit after _Omae wa Mada Gunma o Shiranai_, while I was still ahead.) I truly enjoyed the first ~25 minutes. They should have edited the aftermath of each ball throw more aggressively. By the time of the musical number with the ‘Cinderella’ horse-drawn carriage, they lost me. What made this ABUNDANTLY worthwhile, however, was the accurate depiction of the quality of light along the Setonaikai. One can feel the fun the designers had bringing in all those Venetian glass images (the spires below the airborne horse-drawn carriage), and those wind turbines. Have you seen parts of those turbine blades up close? They’re even more sculpturally BEAUTIFUL than they are freaking HUGE. The producers seem to have said, “Do what you need to do to make this movie as beautiful as you can.”. Yet, it is a conservative, controlled celebration of form, better for having been prevented from becoming an art movie. It’s too bad their composure ruptured with that musical diarrhea excursion. Now, I’m thinking, perhaps I should not have skipped so much in the second half. There appeared to be a budding theme along the lines of, ‘No matter how much we alter past events, the salient challenges of our life’s journey remain the same.’, but I think I’m overcomplicating things (*That’s* never happened before!). It’s just a beautiful (and sometimes weirdly overdone) childhood romance, and there’s nuthin’ wrong with that! :)
